How Filter Elements Work – Part 1

To help you understand how filters work and make sure that you are purchasing the best product for your situations we have made a two part guide to go over our elements.

What is the difference between a depth filter and surface filter element?

This is a good place to start as this is a common question we get asked a lot. Below we describe the different types in more detail to help you get a better understanding.

Depth Filters

Depth filter elements generally consist of a layer of microfibers of varying thickness. The structure of depth filter elements consist of individual microfibres entwined with each other in a random pattern, resulting in a uniform porous structure. Particulates are trapped within the depth of the elements.

Surface Filters (Sieving)

With surface or sieve filter elements, separation of particles takes place on a surface positioned to the direction of flow. Because there is only one effective layer of filter media the service life of these elements is less than a depth filter. Stainless steel mesh elements are typical surface filters.
